I was running Blue around the paddock again when Leyla returned with sandwiches and chips and cookies, along with a six pack of my favorite beer. She even had a blanket to spread out on the ground for a picnic.

“Break time.” She came through the gate. “We might have just enough time for a picnic before the rain hits.” She set her bags on the ground and laid out the blanket. “I watched the news while I made food. We should be getting rain later tonight. A bad storm, actually.” She cheerfully sat on the blanket, riffling through the bags she’d brought.

“Storms out here on the island are no joke. You sure you don’t want me to call Conner or Carter to come get you?” I couldn’t imagine the big city photographer would still be eager to get her hands dirty after a night in the cold leaky barn.

“Positive.” She took a big bite of a roast beef sandwich. Just the sight of it made my mouth water. “Now, come eat while we have a chance.

I sat down opposite her with a groan. It felt good to get off my feet. We were both ravenous after a long afternoon with Blue.

Thunder rumbled across the bay over the mainland. I could just make out the dark clouds in the distance. We were in for a long night. I glanced at my companion for the evening. Her auburn hair was swept back from her face with long wavy strands framing her cheeks. She had big blue eyes and freckles. She hadn’t bothered with makeup. Or a napkin, for that matter. Currently, she had a glob of mustard on her chin.

“What are you grinning about?” She opened a bag of chips.

“Nothing.” I moved to snatch them from her. “You’re just wearing about half the contents of my mustard jar on your face.”

“Did you just steal my chips?” She narrowed her eyes at me, not worrying about the mustard.

“I believe these are my chips.” I looked at the bag. “Barbecue.” I pointed at the label. “My favorite.”

“It just so happens they’re my favorite too.”

“Well, I guess that means I have to share.” I handed the chips back to her with a wink. “You did save my foal, after all.”

“Well, I don’t know about that.” She wiped the mustard from her face with a finger. “You would have found out, eventually.”

“I might not have checked on him again in time. It would have been too late. Colic can be cured, but if left to his own defenses, it could have killed him.”

“I’m glad I was here then.”

“Me too.” And that was the really strange part. For as much as I’d resisted her coming here, I was enjoying her company.
